2009
My third year promoting my music, and quite a big year with a second Front Cover slot, an appearance on Westwood TV and a chance to host a TV show, I had no intention of slowing my productivity.
- December 2009, R U Stoopid!?! named 9th in Oxfordshire Top Twenty Charts
“Mr ShaoDow is a man on a mission. Whether it’s puncturing the ridiculousness of casual racism, or the idiocy of say-nothing grime wannabes, he’s in the face of stupidity everywhere, and never more so than on his most recent single, wherein he asks both friend and foe, “R U Stoopid?”. Now established as Oxford’s finest ever rapper, and surrounded by a regular onstage crew, plus producer Offkey, he’s more confident and fun than ever and he’s been taking his words and music around the streets of cities across the UK. Hopefully it won’t be long before a wider audience is following his rabble-rousing call-and-response anthems.”

- August 2009, Song ‘Unlike You’ (beat by Zaheer) received airplay on Radio One.
- July 2009, Review of Headline gig at The O2 Academy Oxford.
“Mr Shaodow is, as always, impeccable. Masterful with the crowd and a true showman, he’s on fire tonight. Baby Gravy too are on form, Dale’s keyboards and Dave’s rampant bass lines are to the fore as Iona stalks the stage with the kind of assurance and arrogance that befits the band’s sound. When Shaodow appears mid set for a guest spot it’s all too perfect and fizzing with a undeniable energy that is palpable. Collaborations are a tricky thing to pull off, but you suspect that between them Shaodow and Baby Gravy could come up with something quite spectacular. A distinct victory for youth tonight then but dear Lord, it’s exhausting. We’re off for a nice cup of Horlicks and a sit down.”

- May 2009, Made an appearance on Tim Westwood TV, See It Here.
2008
In to my second year and I was determined to improve on what I had done the year before, this year was all about quality over quantity
- December 2008, ‘Grime’ named 15th in The Oxfordshire Top Twenty Charts.
“Having set his bench extremely high with last year’s ‘Look Out, There’s A Black Man Coming’, Mr ShaoDow thankfully lived up to expectations on his latest single, a sweetly humorous side-swipe at say-nothing, image-obsessed grime artists. In this he was joined by producer Offkey, moving into funky electro house and a more dancefloor-friendly sound that didn’t distract from his fullthrottle, lyrically sharp rapping. A musical step up for the best rhymer in town and another reminder that humour is the best way to dismantle just about anything.”
(Nightshift, December 2008, Page 7)
- November 2008, the ‘Grime’ music video was accepted by Channel AKA and received regular airplay for 3 – 4 months. Watch the video here.
- November 2008, took part in a performance to help raise money for The Mouth Cancer Foundation, I also wrote a poem for them which later became the song Mouth Cancer. The article can be Read Here.
- August 2008, a review of my performance at Truck Fest a fantastic festival held every year in Oxfordshire.
“Sadly lacking in tea, but brimming over with cider, we take a gulp and try to push our way into The Beat Hive – the tent that replaces the lounge tent this year. Mr ShaoDow is holding court and the crowd in the palm of his hand, simultaneously proving himself to be a consummate performer and British rap/hip-hop to be an easy equal to American efforts. Having read some embarrassing nonsense following Jay-Z’s Glastonbury booking that music festivals aren’t the place for hip hop, it’s a joy to see ShaoDow’s frenetic set. He’s clearly happy too: much as we love his music, we’ve always felt that his shows can be somewhat nervous and twitchy. Clearly the adoring reception has pushed him to greater things, as he prowls the stage, ranting into two mikes simultaneously and generally sending a tent full of dancers insane, whilst never missing a syllable of his excellent lyrics. Asher Dust helps out with the odd piece of singing and a nice red hat, but this is ShaoDow’s hour, and he deserves it.”
(Nightshift, August 2008, Page 18)
- June 2008, appearance in Oxfordshire Music Scene magazine, showing support for Love Music Hate Racism on page 4 and and article I wrote on page 28. Both can be Read Here.
- April 2008, ‘Grime’ and ‘Funky Grime’ received airplay on Choice FM.
2007
My first year taking my music seriously, I knew nobody in the industry, had nobody to help or guide me, just my Shaolin powers of persistence and some blessings from God. All I knew was I had good music and I was going to get it heard one way or another.
- December 2007, ‘Look Out There’s A Black Man Coming’ named 4th in The Oxfordshire Top Twenty Charts.
“With UK hip hop still trying to escape from its American cousin’s shadow, local law student Mr Shaodow was this year’s most refreshing musical discovery, sticking to his roots and rapping about everything from working in a call centre to the state of British rap. This was the anthem though, a raw, witty, razor-sharp dismemberment of racism that dealt with bigotry in the best way possible – by royally mocking its absurdity. All this and kung-fu moves! The guy is a star in the making.”
(Nightshift December 2007, Page 6)
September 2007, Back when I was still a fresh faced rapper in my first year and I only had two half decent publicity pictures. I made my first Front Cover appearance on The Nightshift, Oxfordshire’s main music magazine.
You can read the full article On Page 4.
- August 2007, An interview with BritishHipHop.co.uk can be Read Here.
- June 2007, An interview with BBC Radio Oxford at Blenheim Palace!?! can be Heard And Read Here.
- April 2007, An interview with Blunted Presents, can be Read Here.
- March 2007, One of THE MOST important written reviews I’ve ever had. I had decided to give my music a proper go in January 2007, had searched every local magazine looking for places to perform. I’d found one monthly event but past that I was struggling. March 2007, after performing at one of the nights this review came out in The Nightshift, Oxfordshire’s main music magazine. After that I started getting just a few more gigs and just a few more opportunities, I made the most of every one and the rest, as they say is history.
“Tonight’s Delicious Music hip hop night exposes Oxford’s music scene to a still rarely seen side of local music; it also heralds the arrival of a young man who could become a genuine local star. Mr Shaodow – real name Elliot –is a London-born Brookes law student with a fresh, individualistic take on rap. His opening number exposes everything that’s great about him: `There’s A Black Man Coming’ is both socially astute but equally witty and warming: “Look out there’s a black man coming / People in wheelchairs get up and start running”.
Throughout a halfhour set Shaodow (a wordplay on Shadow and Shaolin) draws you into his worldview, a world away from rap’s macho bravado. “Anyone here got a job?” he cheerfully enquires before an acapella rap on working in a call centre that’s closer to slam poetry than mainstream hip hop. His rapping style is full of confidence and clarity with a sometimes machine gun-like staccato delivery and a neat line in self-deprecation. He sometimes looks like he needs to relax a bit more but given this is one of his first Oxford shows that’s not surprising and he’s laying his rapping and rhymes pretty bare with only the most minimal electro back-up, samples kept to a bare minimum.
There’s a moment of earnest romance when he comes on like LL Cool J, but it’s when he’s making more political observations he’s in his element and he leaves the best to last, ‘The British Are Coming’, an almost anthemic dissection of what’s wrong with and what can be great about UK rap (ie: stop trying to be American!) with a sing-a-long contribution from the crowd. It’s a great call to arms and signals the arrival in town of a real talent.”
